Historic hotel forms part of town’s elegant seafront

The Gresham is one of 16 five-storey properties in a terrace named Belvidere. The house itself, number 5, was built in the 1820s, making it late Georgian, although too late to have witnessed George III himself. His last visit was in 1805.
For the first half-century of its life the building was a family home. Servants scurried along corridors and up the stairs to meet the needs of the large families in residence. This changed with the coming of the railway.
From the 1860s it became increasingly easy for ‘ordinary’ folk to get away for a seaside holiday. Many came from the Midlands and when they arrived, they needed somewhere to stay…

This flexibility covers dining too; sleepy guests are invited to take breakfast in bed if they choose, and teatime too — when staff will bring a tray of coffee and cake to your room.

We stayed at The Georgian themed town-house called The Gresham. Originally built in 1827, the family-owned guesthouse serves traditional bed and breakfast and offers guests with a selection of sea view and deluxe rooms that are positioned on the Georgian seafront.

Watersports in Weymouth

Weymouth is a seaside town in Dorset, situated in a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey. Our reporter discovered precisely why everyone should be taking a trip to Weymouth, not only in the summer months but all year round. The first stop on the three-night trip was to check into the accommodation. One of the most modern and welcoming is The Gresham Hotel, where we were greeted warmly by owner Louise, who took on the property with her husband Steve and children in February 2021.
