Regency Weymouth

Weymouth and King George III

Weymouth is steeped in history going back before Roman times. We are particularly interested in the Regency history of Weymouth and what life was like when the Gresham was built at the end of that period.

HISTORY OF THE TOWN

Long before Weymouth became a popular seaside resort, the town was a major port. Or rather, two ports, as Weymouth was once two towns—Melcombe Regis to the north (the beach side), and Weymouth to the south.

SEA BATHING

The illustration shows a bathing machine used by King George III in 1789. You can see a full-size model by the King’s Statue on Weymouth seafront. Everyone had to use one to go in the sea.
It was against the law not to!

BREAKFAST TIME

What was breakfast like back in the days of the Regency? Breakfast was still the first meal of the day. You would eat it at 9 or 10 o’clock or even later. That might sound like a
slow start, but you would have got up a few hours earlier.

TWO HUNDRED YEARS OF SEASIDE HOSPITALITY

We aim to give everyone a warm Weymouth welcome, in the spirit of our history as one of the UK’s more popular seaside resorts.
